Things to do in Canberra
Australia’s capital, Canberra, lies around 3 hours south of Sydney and 7 hours north of Melbourne. The site was chosen as the capital as it sat between the two state capitals and acted as a compromise between them.
It is Australia’s largest inland city and similar to Washington DC it is an entirely planned city outside of any state.
The city is based around the artificial Lake Burley Griffin (named after the city’s designer) and Capital Hill, the location of Parliament House.
As a result of Canberra’s status as Australia’s capital it is home to a large number of museums and memorials which are worth a visit, as they are government funded they are generally at the lower end of the cost scale.
While there are certain things that most people do when they visit Canberra, like visit the war memorial or government house, there are also a range of lesser known activities to partake in.
One such place is Questacon.
Questacon is the National Science and Technology Centre and is fun for all ages. They have information and activities on a huge range of subjects, from spiders and water life to the science of the humble balloon, there is something for everybody.
If you have children try to get them in to see “Inside the Body” to give them a greater understanding of what is beneath their skin……and they get to play with a skeleton.
For a cheap, educational day out you cannot beat Questacon.
If you don’t want to be educated, you may want to get a bit of exercise while seeing the sights, if so Canberra has you covered.
Mr Spokes Bike Hire is located on Barrine Drive and they hire out push bikes with maps and suggested routes. There are paths around the lake and through beautiful parkland to see, ask the staff and they will recommend a route for you that meets your needs. The temperate climate in Canberra makes this an ideal way to spend an afternoon, you could even stop for a picnic somewhere and at only $30 for 4 hours it won’t break the bank.
Being the centre of government, Canberra has a wide variety of restaurants to meet everyone’s needs, these can be spread out throughout the city and surrounding suburbs and hard to find the good ones. But here is some good news, there is a Vietnamese restaurant in Canberra that looks like a local takeaway, there is nothing special about its appearance and it is located in a suburban area where most people don’t go….but you should.
Not only is this little restaurant probably the best Vietnamese in Canberra, it is considered to be the best restaurant in Canberra, full stop. It is always packed with locals and politicians (you don’t have to speak to them though) alike and there are pictures of famous people all over the walls.
It is called Griffith Vietnamese Restaurant and it is at 6 Barker St Griffith in a row of shops.
Everything is good at this restaurant and everything is cheap, but if you come with a group of friends leave yourselves in the owner’s hands, he will prepare his specials and give you the feast of your lives.
There is also a free, compulsory dessert, you won’t be sorry.
If for some reason you do not enjoy Vietnamese food and fancy more Australian style pub grub, one location popular for it’s quality food is The Dock at the Kingston foreshore. Here you can sit outside with lovely views over the water and enjoy a delicious homemade pizza for around $20 or a gourmet hot dog for $15. Everything on the menu is excellent and with an extensive cocktail list, beautiful views and a lively crowd it is a great place to while away an evening.
